Russian Progress spacecraft re-entering Earth's atmosphere (click to enlarge) - Credit: NASA
Check out this stunning image of the Russian Progress spacecraft re-entering Earth’s atmosphere after a six-month stay at the International Space Station (ISS).
Released by NASA this week this image really does show Space in its beautiful natural state.
The image is one frame of a time-lapse video taken by the astronauts of Expedition 29 above the ISS as Progress 42P (Russian designation M10-M) was undocked and de-orbited on 29 October this year and depicts the curvature of the Earth, the light emitted by atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere (known as airglow), and the glare of the rising sun.
Only a little post but for a worthy cause!

The ISS is to get three new crewmembers this week, after the Russian built Soyuz spacecraft launches later today from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
NASA astronaut Mike Fossum, Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov, and Satoshi Furukawa of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), will launch into orbit at 16:12 EDT (20:12 GMT/ 21:12 BST) and will make up the remainder of the station’s Expedition 28 crew.
They will be joining current ISS inhabitants NASA astronaut Ron Garan and Russian cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyaev and Andrey Borisenko, who have been living and working at the space station since early April.

The new crewmembers are scheduled to arrive at the space station on Thursday 9th June at 17:22 EDT (21:22 GMT/ 22:22 BST), in their Soyuz TMA-02M craft, which is the second version of Russia’s upgraded Soyuz capsule.
NASA TV are scheduled to show pre-launch coverage starting at 14:45 EDT (18:45 GMT/19:45 BST) with lift-off just under an hour and a half later, so watch above or click here for the external site.

The Soyuz TMA-20 spacecraft which undocked from the ISS yesterday landed safely in a remote area southeast of the town of Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan (on Tuesday, 24 May, 2011), with Expedition 27 Commander Dmitry Kondratyev, and Flight Engineers Paolo Nespoli and Cady Coleman onboard.
After a textbook landing that saw the capsule remain upright, Commander Kondratyev was the first to emerge, followed closely by Coleman and Nespoli. They were seated in reclining chairs to allow them some time to acclimatise to gravity again, before being carried to nearby medical tents for examinations.

NASA Astronaut Coleman, Russian Cosmonaut Kondratyev and ESA Astronaut Nespoli have returned home after more than five months onboard the International Space Station where they served as members of the Expedition 26 and 27 crews.
NASA are hoping to release some of the first images captured by Nespoli during the historic photo shoot later today (watch this space for details!)

Work to replace and fully test an electrical distribution box in STS-134 Endeavour’s engine compartment will further delay the next launch attempt to at least 10th May, NASA advised yesterday. An official launch date is only likely to be announced on Friday after the repairs are complete.

This tentative new date is based on a full review of the work needed to replace the faulty aft load control assembly. This showed it would take longer than originally expected to complete repairs (and all required testing) in time to start a fresh countdown for a launch on Sunday.
The lift-off of Endeavour was scrubbed on Friday 29th April when telemetry showed hydraulic power system fuel line heaters were not working properly. Later tests determined the problem was with the aft load control assembly No. 2 in the Shuttle’s engine compartment.
NASA are hoping to extend Endeavour’s mission by up to two days to allow the crew more time to complete their objectives, but with the Russian Soyuz* capsule scheduled to detach from the ISS on 23rd May (returning 3 of the 6 ISS crew to Earth) this will depend entirely on which day Endeavour is able to launch on. On this day in 1961 Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first ever human in space when he orbited the Earth once during a 108 minute flight.
As mentioned on this blog a couple of times in the lead up to today, firstorbit.org have created a film shot from the International Space Station to show the world what Gagarin would have seen.
We’ve all become accustomed to seeing our world from space, but try to imagine what it would have been like to see it like that, through human eyes, for the very first time!
The firstorbit YouTube channel is streaming the movie now, a combination of new visual footage and the original radio conversations Yuri had with ground control. Definitely worth a watch, the 50th anniversary of such a turning point in our exploration of space and our understanding of what is “out there” is surely worth celebrating!
